Let’s play a little mind association – chiropractor- adjustment. They go together, right? Crazy as it might sound, this is exactly the perception that I’d like to change.

To start with, it’s not surprising. All of your past experience tells you that you go to the chiropractor to get adjusted. I want you to take a moment and really think about what that means. It means that no matter what, you know that when you go to the chiropractor SOMETHING is always wrong with you! Isn’t that sad? It seems that human nature makes us assume that something will always be wrong with us.

When patients come to my office, we have a mindset “reset.” We work on retraining our brains to understand WHY we go to the chiropractor, and also how we should feel when we go there. I love helping my patients feel better in their bodies. It’s why I became an upper cervical chiropractor in the first place. The body has an amazing ability to heal itself when it’s allowed to function the way it was designed to.

In my office, utilizing upper cervical (UC) chiropractic care, I’m able to check a patient using objective testing (a thermal scan) to see if they are truly stuck, or if their body is just stressed out and needs some other form of help and self care. Many times the brain and nervous system are doing exactly what they were designed to do (self healing), but we have overused them to a point where they’re not actually stuck – just in a state of high stress.

Using the scan allows me to determine if patients truly need an adjustment or not AND lets me help them focus on ways to feel better while their body is doing its job. This new mindset allows them to see how amazing the body truly is — that it can actually hold a correction and that they can keep making improvements so that they don’t need to get adjusted as often.

So let’s try this again – chiropractor…checkup! I mean, how much better is it to focus on how well your body can function? I try to relate it to going in for a mammogram, pap smear, or prostate exam. You go in, pay for the test, and truly hope nothing is wrong! Wouldn’t you love to go see someone with an optimistic outlook on your health? Someone who also does a happy dance with you when you find out you don’t need an adjustment because your body is being awesome?!

Of course, if you do need an adjustment (think of this as a tiny nudge in the right direction) we can do that, and then focus future check ups on maintaining that correction. It takes the body time to heal, time to rest in between adjustments and time to do its job. Come in with a positive mindset and the assumption that your body is adjusting itself!

Next time you’re not sure if chiropractic can help you, just remember this association-chiropractor … brain and nervous system … all major functions of the body. Your visit is a check up, and having your most important system checked should bring you peace of mind. Chances are, your body is healing itself!
